Freediving is not just about holding your breath.

This course combines theory, pool training and ocean line diving to help you become a safer, more confident freediver.

You’ll learn how your body responds underwater, how pressure affects equalising, how to breathe and recover properly, and how to use relaxation instead of force. The focus is not on pushing limits, but on building calm, controlled and repeatable skills.

Beyond the physical skills, many people find freediving helps with stress, focus and mental clarity. Learning to stay relaxed while your body experiences discomfort can be incredibly powerful, both in and out of the water.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong foundation in freediving safety, technique, buddy procedures and depth progression, giving you the confidence to continue your freediving journey within your certification limits.

Rob

Lead Instructor | SDI Scuba Instructor | PFI Freediving & Spearfishing Instructor

Rob is the engine room behind Squids. Equal parts instructor, gear nerd and professional hype man, he somehow manages to make complex skills feel simple and intimidating environments feel approachable.

A certified SDI Scuba Instructor and PFI Freediving and Spearfishing Instructor, Rob is also a passionate cave diver who never misses an opportunity to talk equipment, streamline a setup, or explain why your next piece of gear definitely matters.

Outside the water, Rob is an adrenaline junkie through and through — with a background in paragliding, skydiving, BASE jumping, rock climbing and kite surfing. Teaching has always come naturally to him, and nothing beats seeing someone leave the water more confident than when they arrived.

This course is designed for people wanting to become certified freedivers and develop the skills to freedive independently with a buddy.

Over two days you’ll learn the science behind breath-hold diving, improve your efficiency in the water and build safe habits that transfer into snorkelling, spearfishing, surfing and underwater exploration.

Beyond just learning how to hold your breath, this course helps you develop a deeper connection with the ocean and your body. You’ll gain a better understanding of how to stay calm under pressure, manage your breathing and move efficiently through the water — skills that often carry over into everyday life, improving focus, relaxation and confidence.

Many participants find freediving becomes a powerful tool for stress reduction and mental clarity. By learning to slow down your breathing and control your response to discomfort, you build resilience and awareness that extends far beyond the water.

You’ll also gain the confidence to explore the ocean safely and independently with a buddy, opening up new opportunities for underwater exploration, travel and ocean-based activities. Whether your goal is to dive deeper, improve your snorkelling, support spearfishing or simply feel more comfortable in the ocean, this course provides a strong and structured foundation.

Unlike introductory experiences, this course includes formal skill development and performance requirements to achieve certification.

You’ll work through pool and open water sessions covering breathing, equalisation, static and dynamic breath holds, rescue procedures and depth training.

Certification isn’t based on athletic ability — it’s based on demonstrating safe technique and meeting course standards.

ABOUT SQUIDS DIVE CO

Built by Ocean People

Squids Dive Co wasn’t created to be another cookie-cutter dive shop or high-volume tourist operation. It was built by two locals genuinely obsessed with the ocean, adventure, and helping people discover what’s possible underwater. From the very beginning, our vision was simple: create the kind of dive company we’d actually want to book ourselves — small groups, real coaching, relaxed vibes, genuine connection, and unforgettable experiences in the water. What started as a simple idea has grown into a passionate ocean community based in beautiful Port Stephens, bringing together divers, snorkellers, freedivers, spearos, and ocean lovers who feel most alive by the sea.
